The Team to Watch
South Carolina has been absolutely dominant this season, with head coach Dawn Staley leading the Gamecocks to an unblemished 32-0 record. Kamilla Cardoso and Raven Johnson have shown out for the team, making them the obvious favorite to win the tournament and take home Staley’s third national title.
The competition will be real as the Iowa Hawkeyes hope to send Caitlin Clark off to the WNBA in a victorious fashion.
Clark surpassed Pete Maravich for most points in NCAA Division I history, men’s or alternately women’s play. She also scored 30 points 55 times in her collegiate career, the most in the past 25 years, meaning she can take over games and push her team to triumph.
Angel Reese and LSU should also have your attention as they have consistently played South Carolina extreme and physically. They have yet to defeat the Gamecocks in head coach Kim Mulkey’s three years with the team. On the surface, one would suggest that the Tigers are at a disadvantage. The fact that they may not have to try and match up with their rivals relying upon how things fall in the bracket means they can claim a national title without necessarily having to match up with Staley’s team.
USC, Notre Dame, and UConn are all capable of winning the tournament and claiming the title, yet it feels a lot of like this year’s tournament is the story of three star-studded teams, all with the potential chance to achieve history.
